The wow Arcane Mage is often the most forgotten of the three Mage specializations. While Fire excels at PVE and Frost dominates PVP, the WoW Arcane Mage has little room to shine. But with the revamp of talents in Mists of Pandaria, the Arcane Mage is a very competent damage dealer as well as PVP player.
The Basics of the WoW Arcane Mage
There are lots of things to know about your specialization before you get started. The Arcane Mage is a ranged damage dealer that brings enemies down from afar. Raw arcane magic is the fuel for their spells and they make good use of it. The Mage can only wear cloth armor and usually opts for one handed weapon and an off hand item. But if a two handed weapon like a staff is better, it’s probably better to take that. Intellect is the Mage’s primary stat as it increases the damage their spells do. There is one more thing to learn about the Arcane Mage before we move on and that is its Mastery: Mana Adept. This skill makes the Mage deal more damage when they have more mana. In order to deal the most damage as an Arcane Mage, you have to constantly try to keep your mana pool near full.
Arcane Mage Spells
Arcane Blast and Arcane Barrage are probably the two spells that you will be casting most often. Both of these spells build up stacks of Arcane Charge which can be consumed by Arcane Blast. These three spells form the core of your rotation while your choice in talents affects your highest damage ability. Another choice in your talent tree will greatly affect how you play your Arcane Mage as well. The Tier 5 talent choices are Nether Tempest, Living Bomb, or Frost Bomb. No matter which one you choose, this will be your highest priority. The next tier of talents are the one that affects your game play. If you choose Rune of Power, you place the rune on the ground and try your best to stand in it at all times. Incanter’s Ward is a cool down that gives a buff, just keep this spell on cool down if you choose it. Finally, the Invocation talent makes you struggle to get your mana down to forty percent and to use Evocation to restore it and buff yourself. All of these talents are viable choices.
Cool Downs for the WoW Arcane Mage
Arcane Power is the Mage’s biggest DPS cool down. It makes you deal more damage, but your spells also cost much more mana. Time Warp was given to Mages as of Cataclysm and Shamans have never been more angry with Blizzard. This spell is basically Blood Lust as it provides the same effect and shares a cool down with it. Apart from this, the Mage’s other main cool down is its Mirror Images spell. While this spell is powerful, it should really only be used when your images can attack a boss for the full thirty second duration.
